{"id":87,"date":"2010-08-22T19:25:39","date_gmt":"2010-08-22T19:25:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.walsgrove.co.uk\/wordpress\/?p=87"},"modified":"2010-08-22T19:25:39","modified_gmt":"2010-08-22T19:25:39","slug":"victoria-plums-now-available","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.walsgrove.co.uk\/wordpress\/?p=87","title":{"rendered":"Victoria Plums, now available"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>One of the most\u00a0sought\u00a0after British plums is the Victoria which is now available to pick, but here is some interesting history for you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The plums grown in Britain are derived from fruits\u00a0originally\u00a0from Damascus, Syria and Persia<\/li>\n<li>The plums were initially brought to Britain by the Romans<\/li>\n<li>The modern plum was found by nurseryman Mr Denyer in a garden in Alderton in Sussex.<\/li>\n<li>Prior to the plum being sold to Mr Denyer the plum was named &#8220;Sharp&#8217;s Emperor&#8221; or &#8220;Alderton&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Mr Denyer sold these plums as &#8220;Denyer&#8217;s Victoria&#8221; after Queen Victoria who was crowned in 1837.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>The problem with these is that there is no place named Alderton in Sussex, so where could this have come from?
